Perhaps it seems too good to be true that delicious foods and beverages, such as pizza and beer, can be good for you. They absolutely can be! Of course, everything in moderation is the best way to go with most foods but there is plenty of room in a way of eating for both of these. Feel free to drink up and nosh on your favorite slice as both can be healthy for you and there are a few reasons why.


Pizza is a quintessential part of the American diet in many ways. It is often demonized as a food to avoid for people watching their health or weight. There are a wide variety of toppings available for pizza and some are healthier than others. Pizza commonly contains some form of tomatoes, such as tomato based pizza sauce. An Italian study shows that people who eat pizza once a week actually get certain forms of cancer less than others. The reason is the lycopene from the tomatoes. Not to mention that cheese is an excellent form of calcium and meat is a great source of protein. It’s true that both of these things can be fatty so use a light hand.

The way in which to boost the health of pizza is to choose toppings wisely. It also helps to make your own pizza. Choose or make the pizza with a whole wheat crust. Toppings such as spinach or green peppers add valuable nutrition. Grilled chicken is another pizza topping to consider. Portion size is also a factor. Eating a large pepperoni pizza at one setting isn’t the healthiest thing to do. Have a few slices of pizza, add a side salad along with it, and enjoy!


It’s true that beer is not touted as being useful or optimal for health reasons. Surprisingly, beer actually has benefits that are similar to those found in wine! Somehow it doesn’t get the same press. There are benefits to all kinds of beers so you can feel free to drink your very favorite brand. The key is not exceed two beers per day.

Beer is linked to reduced risk of both vascular and heart disease. Beer is made with both wheat and barley. Yeast contains a lot of vitamins and they do survive the process of fermentation. Vitamin B6 is one of those vitamins. This is what reduces heart disease as it prevents buildup of homocysteine. Beer gives a substantial increase of vitamin B6 into blood plasma. Savoring your favorite beer in the evening can also help you sleep soundly at night.

Eating a healthy diet is about balance. There is no reason to eschew all of your favorite foods or drinks. Instead, look at the big picture. Pizza and beer may not be ideal if you consume too much of it, but are perfectly fine in moderation. Luckily, food can be tasty and flavorful, as well as being healthy.

The search for the beef starts, with Rocky’s Burger Bus. Located on the corner of 11st and 46ave SE, this family owned and operated burger joint caters to the busy on the go working man. I decided to try the Rocky’s Special, a single cheese burger and fries with soda for $9.00.  The burger comes loaded with onions and relish and the beef paddy is about an inch thick.  My first bite confirmed that I had found the beef.  The old fashion cut fries where ample and complimented the hand formed beef paddy. The Rocky’s Burger is a good bang for your buck.  Which seems to be a rare find in Calgary today?  I definitely recommend this burger as a must try.  In fact I plan on visiting Rocky’s Burgers again, this time I going for the double burger.

Boogie’s Burgers

Well everybody is raving about Boogie’s Burgers on Edmonton Trail.  So off I went to find this quaint little burger joint, during the lunch hour.  Boogie Burger was packed with patrons and the music was turned up loud and the place was hopping.  Surprisingly enough the service was fairly quick and I was served with in twenty minutes.  I ordered the triple burger with onion rings and a coke, with a three dollar tip the cost brought me just over $17.00 for my meal.  The Bun on the burger was large fluffy and wonderful, the meat paddies where so thin the meat had troubles staying together. My question is simple; “where’s the beef?”  The onion rings where quite typical of a dinner or burger joint.  I must admit I liked the atmosphere of this dingy little burger joint, the music and the service.  Simply I was just not impressed with the size of the meat.  In closing, if you’re looking for a trendy little burger joint and your part vegetarian then this is the place for you.

Health Benefits of Eating a Raw Food Diet

Deep Fried Peaches


Fresh Peaches
Graham Cracker crumbs
Ice Cream


Wash peaches and drop them in a pot of boiling water for about 30 seconds. Carefully peal off the skin. Cut the peaches in half and remove the pits. Place ice cream in the hole where the pit used to be. Press the two halves of the peach back together and cover with the graham cracker crumbs. Carefully place peaches in a 300F deep fryer for 30 seconds or until brown. Place peaches in a bowl and add 1/3 of  an oz of Grande Marnier in a bowl and light. When flame is out put more ice cream or fresh cream on top.

Deep Fried Cheese Curds


1 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
2 beaten eggs
1/2 cup milk
1 lb cheese curds
oil for frying
ranch for dipping


Mix together the flour, and baking powder in a bowl. Slowly add in the eggs and milk. Heat oil in skillet to about medium heat. Dip the cheese curds into the batter and gently place into the deep fryer. Cook until golden brown approximately 1 minute.

Deep Fried Corn on the Cob


4 fresh ears of corn
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 beaten eggs
1/2 cup cornmeal (may need to add more)
1/2 cup self-rising flour
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/8 pepper


Preheat oil to 375F

Combine buttermilk, eggs and cornmeal to make the batter.

In another bowl mix together flour, garlic, salt and pepper.

Dip the corn into the cornmeal batter and coat well. Next roll the corn in the flour mixture.

Slowly place corn in fryer one at a time. Fry corn for about 3 minutes or until golden brown.

Drain on paper towels and season as desired.

Deep Fried Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough


Cookie Dough

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup unsalted butter
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup pasteurized eggs
1tsp Vanilla extract
2 cups chocolate chips


2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp Baking powder
1 large egg
1/2 cup seltzer water or club soda
Vegetable oil for frying


Mix flour, baking soda and salt in a bowl and set aside. In another bowl beat the butter until its light in color. Next add the brown and white sugar into the butter. Beat until mixture is light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time and beat until they are mixed. Add the vanilla. Using low speed add the flour and stir in the chocolate chips.

Take one tablespoon of dough at a time and roll into a ball. Place each on a cookie shoot and place them in the freezer for at least 30 minutes.

To make the batter whisk together flour, sugar, and the baking powder. Next add eggs and half of the seltzer or club soda and whisk to combine. Continue to add the Seltzer until the batter is like a heavy cream.

Heat the oil in the deep fryer to 350 F.

Take the chilled dough balls and individually dip them into the batter. Carefully place the dough in the oil. Fry a couple of dough balls at a time occasionally turning them until they are golden brown. Place on paper towels to drain and serve while still warm.

Deep Fried Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich


Loaf of fresh white bread
Smooth peanut butter
grape jelly
powdered sugar
whole milk
Large Eggs
Fresh vegetable oil
2 cups self rising flour
1 cup white sugar


Trim the crust from your bread. Spread peanut butter and jelly onto the bread and crimp your edges to seal. Dip the sandwich into the milk and egg mixture. Next dip it into the flour and sugar mixture.

Drop your sandwiches into a 350F deep fryer. Fry until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
