Just a video of the snow falling in Calgary on April 19 2008. Just some great weather we are having.

There was a time when smoking was seen as the “cool” thing to do. Many people smoked to fit in. Others claim it’s to hard to go to a bar and drink well not lighting up. Peer pressure, and stress also apparently contribute to people’s addiction. Back in the olden days I don’t think they were aware of how bad smoking was for you. It’s amazing that so many people still smoke even now that they know that cigarettes are filled with 100’s of chemicals. Many of the substances in cigarettes have been tested and approved to be used as additives in food, no testing has been done on what happens when they are burned . Burning a cigarette creates over 4000 chemical compounds. Unfortunately, not only are smokers poisoning themselves but they are poisoning the people around them with their second hand smoke.
Smoking is known to contribute to heart attacks and stroke, lung problems including lung cancer as well as other cancers, harm to children (SIDS, miscarriages), heart and blood vessel disease and many other deadly diseases. Smoking also causes bad breath, yellow teeth, smelly clothes, and wrinkling of the skin.
Some good self-help tips for gradually quitting smoking include;
-Changing to brands with less nicotine
-Keeping records of how many cigarettes you smoke and try to beat it the next day
-Brush your teeth and notice how fresh your mouth feels
-Avoid trigger situations like going to bars.
-Get a check up before quitting
-Don’t worry about weight gain
-Use the money you save to treat yourself to something nice.
If you need help to quit smoking consider some joining a support group, call help lines, or quit with a friend. Here are some websites that will provide some good online support and information on quitting smoking.
In the end the important thing to remember is that only good can come from quitting smoking. You will have more time to spend with your family, you won’t put others at risk and you will look and feel healthier.

Today’s economy goes through many fluctuations. It is important that you are prepared and able to save money whether the market is good or bad. Here are some great money saving tips for you to consider.
Going to hair schools for your hair cuts – I realize you may think you won’t get a nice cut because they are just beginners but they do a very good job and are supervised by an actual professional. If you’re a guy and you don’t mind you can shave your head. Being a girl you can also opt for a shorter hairstyle. They are more versatile and you use less hair products.
Skip designer clothes! As a child I thought this was the hardest thing in the world and I’m sure it will get a book from your teens. What they have to realize is that just because they are wearing designer clothes doesn’t mean they are any nicer or have a higher quality. Some of my nicest clothes ended up just being regular generic brands.
Eat Healthy. Not only is it good for your waistline its good for your wallet. Cutting out take out can save your family 100’s of dollars (depending on how much you order out). Also putting money aside to buy fresh fruits and vegetables is much cheaper than buying processed food. You can still have take out but try to cut it down to one day each month. Sit down with your family and agree on what day of the month you will use and take turns picking out what restaurant you will eat at. This makes it more of a treat rather than a regular occurrence.
Cook together. Worried about having to spend more time in the kitchen rather then dining out? By getting your whole family involved in the cooking process it can cut down on the stress drastically. Sit down with your family and compare schedules have everyone cook at least one day a week, whether it’s buy themselves or with a parent. Your children can learn a great life skill and you can bond and catch up with what’s going on in their lives.
Use your library card! Library cards can pay for themselves in one visit! This gives your family an endless choice of books, movies, and music. You may not be able to keep the material but you won’t spend your money and end up not liking what you bought. Not to mention most of us will read a book and then it will collect dust on our book shelves. By going to the library your family gets out of the house and has a special outing.
Look for free activities in recreation guides. I have seen lots of these in the city. They are free booklets you can pick up at grocery stores or recreation centers. They list numerous activities from nature walks to movies at little or no charge. I remember growing up the skating rink by my house had free skating on Monday nights. It may only be one day a week but the anticipation that built up made it well worth it.
Play games. Instead of spending $50 dollars (or more if your family is bigger) have a game night. You can even play free games. Make your own pictionary boards, play charades, hangman, or X and O’s.
Carpool or walk. Many companies have carpools. They are a great option for saving money and cutting down on greenhouse gases. Gather some people together and take turns on who will be driving. You can cut the amount you spend on gas dramatically and cut down on driving during daily rush hour. If your work is close you can also walk or ride your bike in the spring and summer. You will save money, get exercise and gain an appreciation for the beautiful environment around you that you haven’t had a second thought about.

Source: WikipediaTim Horton’s which is usually open 24 hours a day, Is no longer a 24 hour place to get coffee and donuts. Most of the locations in Calgary are now not open through out the night because there just isn’t enough people to staff their locations. I worked quite a few night shift jobs where I always went to Tim Horton’s for lunch break. I can no longer do this because they are closed now. It’s amazing to think that a hugely successful coffee and donut shop can’t keep their stores open because there isn’t anyone to staff them. All day long there is a line of cars in their drive-thurs and people lined up in their stores. But the night owls can’t get their coffee fix there anymore. What are the police going to do? I’ve always seen police at Tim Horton’s at night. But where are they going to get their coffee fix? Maybe Wal-mart, it seems like they are the only people that can stay open 24 hours anymore.
So with that said, Calgary really has a huge staffing shortage. Check out some of the headlines in a Google Search for Calgary Staffing Shortage. Companies are always recruiting elsewhere in Canada and all over the world. We bring in workers from Mexico and the Philippines, but is still not helping with the high demand for workers. The other problem is a housing shortage.
Theses are just some of the downfalls of a booming economy. I guess I can do with out my late night donut and coffee.

I recently purchased a new bluetooth headset to use with my Blackberry Pearl. It was the Aliph Jawbone. I must say it is one awesome piece of technology. In using it so far it really does a grate job in blocking ambient noise. I made one phone call with my car stero pretty loud and the person had no idea the radio was on. The only problem I seemed to have so far is that I loose the connection with the phone when the phone is in its holster. Maybe it’s the magnet that keeps the holster closed, I really don’t know. The problem don’t happen when the phone is not in the holster.
Some stats and information from Aliph’s website;
